This valuable document was donated to the archive by Mrs Kristina Horowitz Krakus, who now lives in Denmark. Her father Henryk (Chaim) Horowitz was born on 1 January 1914 in Czarny Dunajec as the son of Józef Horowitz and Kreisel (Karolina) née Kraus. According to his descendants, Henryk's father earned his living mainly as a shoemaker, but on this certificate a butcher was entered as his profession. An annotation on the certificate also confirms the information about Joseph and Kreisel's marriage of 27 February 1916.
The document not only confirms the details of the Horowitz family, but also of Rabbi Isaac Lipschitz, who had held this position since at least 1914. He was rabbi at least until 1930, as his signature is on another document from that year, but he was probably rabbi even until the outbreak of war.
Israel Kleinzahler is entered as the mohel. We have had no information about such a person so far; it is possible that this is the son of Ari Leib Kleinzahler, who was a mohel in Czarny Dunajec for many years. Israel Kleinzahler appears on the list of Holocaust victims from the Nowy Sącz region prepared by the Sądecki Sztetl.
I would like to thank Kristina Horowitz Krakus for passing on the document.
